Five ALSs in German, each signed "M. Born," totaling ten pages on six sheets, 4 x 5.75 to 6 x 9, April 25, 1960–November 25–1962.
Born writes to the physicist Ernst Lamla, regarding Alfred Landé’s “re-foundation” of quantum mechanics. On April 25, 1960, he writes that the matter is (translated): "embarrassing to me, and from which I have been suffering for years. For he constantly plays me off against Bohr, Heisenberg, and von Weizsäcker, as if I had said something superior to what they said. In truth, it seems to me that he has misunderstood everything—both what B[ohr], H[eisenberg], and W[eizsäcker] actually said, and my own views on the matter. I have just been corresponding with Heisenberg about this, and he shares my opinion. Landé has remained stuck at an earlier stage of the theory; he has not pursued the subject further, knows nothing of quantum field theory, and believes that my old formulations remain valid even today. The only truth in this is that, back then—35 years ago—my ideas were somewhat ‘modified’ by the Copenhagen group (as we called them at the time), and this is what annoyed him. But today, that is all ancient history. The embarrassing part is that he singles me out for praise while ridiculing and disparaging the others. What he himself contributes to the subject is quite meager. The fact that many people agree with him and request offprints merely demonstrates that the number of the less gifted exceeds that of the truly discerning." Born, however, advised Lamla not to simply reject the paper, but rather to accept it on the condition that “the attacks against his opponents” be omitted.
In a postcard of August 15, 1961—written during an extended stay at a clinic in Göttingen—Born expresses his thanks for two articles that had been sent to him.
On January 2, 1962, he inquires about an essay on color: "What you heard from Weizsäcker is quite correct: I have a strong desire to set down in writing my thoughts on the ‘problem of color’—specifically in the form of a philosophical inquiry. And I had planned to speak on this subject at the Lindau Conference (at the end of June). However, this has once again become doubtful, as I have fallen ill again—suffering, euphemistically speaking, from a circulatory disorder; yet my doctor takes this matter so seriously that I am obliged to follow strict medical orders."
On May 6, 1962, he follows up, expressing gratitude for the willingness “to consider the possibility of publishing my lecture on color.”
The final letter, November 25, 1962, concerns the correction of galley proofs: “I have requested a revision (preferably with the figures inserted into the text), as the figures constitute a somewhat complex matter that I would very much like to verify personally.” In overall fine condition.
