German industrialist and humanitarian (1908–1974) who is credited with saving the lives of 1,200 Jews during the Holocaust, protecting them through employment in his enamelware and ammunitions factories. ALS in German, signed “Oskar,” one page both sides, 5.25 x 8.25, January 9, 1920. Handwritten letter by the 12-year-old to Schindler to his cousin Emilie Tyrolt, in the United States, thanking her for a “lovely Christmas card” and describing his efforts at school. In part (translated): "I received your lovely Christmas card, for which I thank you most sincerely. Enclosed, I am sending you a picture of my little sister—you will hopefully still remember the ‘Pitzbub.’ As you may have already heard, I am attending 'Realschule.' There is a great deal to learn there, as they really put us through the wringer. But that doesn’t matter; as the saying goes: ‘Patience brings roses; fooling around brings torn trousers.’" The integral leaf carries a handwritten postscript from his mother Franziska, née Luser (1884–1935), to the same recipient. In fine condition. Accompanied by an original cabinet photograph of Oskar and Elfriede Schindler, taken in February 1920, from the studio of A. Papouschek, Zwittau.
