Description

British artist and writer (1812-1898) best known for his 'nonsense' books, which feature his quirky drawings and amusing verse. ALS, signed "Edward Lear," one page both sides, 7.5 x 10.5, May 3, 1844. Handwritten letter to a gentleman, written beneath a detailed sketch of the area east of Rome. In part: "I am sorry I cannot go tomorrow to Gabii with you—for I shall not have time. In case you go—I send you this map—which is near enough the truth to be useful." He proceeds to give careful directions, mentioning significant landmarks. In very good to fine condition, with folds, creases, and a tear to integral address leaf.
