Description

"Where Do We Go from Here?"—MLK Jr. inks a publishing contract for the German translation of his final book

DS, signed “Martin L. King, Jr.,” three pages, 8.5 x 14, May 22, 1967. Memorandum of agreement between King and Econ Verlag relating to the international publication of his last book, "Where Do We Go from Here: Chaos or Community?," granting "World German-language rights" for the sum of $1,500 plus royalties. The German title, "Wohin führt unser Weg?," has been added near the top in blue ballpoint. The contract stipulates that the "Copyright notice shall read: (c) 1967 by Martin Luther King, Jr.," and that the translation into German is to be completed and published within 18 months from the date of the agreement. Signed at the conclusion in blue ballpoint by Martin Luther King, Jr., and also initialed by him, "MLK," on each of the first two pages. Countersigned by his personal secretary, Dora E. McDonald, as a witness. In fine condition.

Where Do We Go from Here: Chaos or Community?, released in English in June 1967, was the fourth and final book written by Martin Luther King, Jr., composed during a period of deliberate retreat to Jamaica, where King sought the solitude necessary to reflect on the state of the civil rights movement. In its pages, King grapples with the movement's hard-won gains—including the landmark Voting Rights Act of 1965—while confronting the persistent challenges of poverty, racial injustice, and the question of how a broad-based social movement could sustain meaningful influence across both political parties. One chapter draws directly from his Nobel Peace Prize acceptance lecture, delivered at the University of Oslo in December 1964. Completed just one year before his assassination, the book stands as King's final and most searching meditation on the future of America.
