Description

Extremely early, circa 1915, portrait of Winston Churchill by A. H. Poole of Waterford, signed for his WWI driver during his tenure as Minister of Munitions

Early circa 1915 matte-finish 6.25 x 8.25 portrait of Churchill smiling in a fine head-and-shoulders pose by A. H. Poole of Waterford, signed across the bottom in ink, "Winston S. Churchill." Also bears the pencil signature of the Poole studio. Flush-mounted on bevelled board with studio’s printed note to verso (‘… this photograph is delicately finished by hand…’), and loosely enclosed in Poole’s original printed wrappers. In fine condition. Accompanied by a brief provenance note, indicating that this photograph was signed for Edith Nancy Bennett, who drove Churchill and Sir Arthur Duckham during the First World War. At this period, Churchill was serving as Minister of Munitions during the First World War, with Duckham acting as an industrial adviser assisting in the coordination of fuel resources and wartime production. A very rare, early portrait of Churchill; we have been unable to locate another example, either signed or unsigned. The National Library of Ireland holds Poole's archive, including the negative of this photograph, which they, or Poole's archive, date to February 1915.

Winston Churchill’s impact on Britain’s wartime munitions effort combined early technological foresight with later administrative effectiveness: as early as 1915, while at the Admiralty, he helped establish and fund the Landship Committee, which developed the first tank prototypes and laid the foundation for their adoption by the Army in September 1916, maintaining close involvement even while out of office. Upon his appointment as Minister of Munitions in July 1917, he assumed responsibility for overseeing the nation’s armaments production system, where he emphasized efficiency, expanded output of artillery, aircraft, and tanks, and encouraged industrial collaboration with the United States. Under his direction, the Ministry became highly productive, and by April 1918, was able to deliver twice as many guns and airplanes as had been lost in the German spring offensive while replacing tanks with newer, improved models, ensuring that British forces were better supplied during a decisive phase of the war.

Sir Arthur McDougall Duckham (1879–1932) was a pioneering British engineer and industrialist whose innovations in gas engineering, particularly the recovery of valuable byproducts such as benzol, proved of major commercial and strategic importance in the early twentieth century. During the First World War, he placed his expertise at the service of the government, rising through a succession of senior roles within the Ministry of Munitions, where he worked under Winston Churchill, who memorably praised him as ‘that gallant, ardent, generous spirit that was Arthur Duckham.’ A respected figure in both industry and public life, Duckham later became the first President of the Institution of Chemical Engineers, cementing his legacy as a leading force in the development of modern chemical engineering.
