At this juncture, the Rolling Stones had just concluded their second British tour (February 8–March 7, 1964) and, poised for their first American tour in early June, had recently released their first U.S. single, ‘Not Fade Away,’ through London Records on March 6, 1964, backed with ‘I Wanna Be Your Man.’ The single reached number 48 on the Billboard Hot 100 and later served as the opening track of the American version of the band’s self-titled debut album. In the interim between March 9th and their departure for the United States, the band played several warm-up shows in England and, when time permitted, responded to fan mail—on this occasion even enclosing clipped strands of hair at a fan’s request. A notable multi-signed letter from a pivotal moment in the band’s early rise, elevated furthermore by the uncommon inclusion of hair attributed to four original members, including Brian Jones.
