Description

Twice-signed Lennon agreement with EMI Records for the 1969 avant-garde Wedding Album, released with Yoko Ono

Twice-signed DS, one page, 8 x 10, November 7, 1969. Agreement between EMI Records, Lennon, and Apple Corps authorizing Lennon—despite his existing 1967 contractual obligations—to record for Apple a 12˝ LP with Yoko Ono entitled “Wedding Album,” with EMI to manufacture and distribute the release. Signed twice in black felt tip by Lennon, as both artist and Apple Director, and also signed by EMI managing director Ken East. Two additional pages are stapled to the front of the document, one being the original document sent to Lennon for his signature, as well as a cover letter, dated November 10, 1969, addressed to Peter Howard simply stating, "Herewith formal letter dealing with the 'Wedding Album.'" In fine condition. Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Tracks, and full letters of authenticity from JSA and REAL.

Released in 1969, Wedding Album commemorates John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s March 20 marriage, at which time he adopted the name John Ono Lennon. The experimental LP consists of two tracks: ‘John & Yoko,’ featuring the pair calling out each other’s names over the sound of their heartbeats, and ‘Amsterdam,’ a collage of interviews, conversations, and audio from their ‘Bed-In’ honeymoon.

Created as Lennon’s artistic focus moved beyond the Beatles during their final year, the album forms part of a trio of avant-garde collaborations with Ono—Unfinished Music No. 1: Two Virgins and Unfinished Music No. 2: Life with the Lions—that document this transitional moment in his career. A unique artifact from a pivotal period in Beatles history, signed not once but twice by Lennon.
