American historian and educator (1789–1866) who served as president of Harvard from 1849 to 1853. ALS, one page both sides, 7.75 x 10, May 15, 1855. Handwritten letter to Boston writer and publisher Nahum Capen, in part: "Allow me to thank you for the four numbers of the 'History of Democracy,' which you had the kindness to send to me. I have perused them with great satisfaction, both as to the matter they contain, & the manner in which it is presented. You have set yourself a formidable task in undertaking a historical analysis of the principles of free governments, & a detailed account of their various & multiplied operations in this country from the first settlement down to the present time. The execution of such a work requires not only vast research, but much labor & the steady exercise of a sound judgment to secure completeness in the parts, & a comprehensive view of the whole subject, which appears to be your design. If carried through with the same thoroughness of investigation, & in the same spirit of candor, which are shown in these numbers, it cannot fail to be a valuable contribution to our political history." In very good to fine condition, with splitting to the central horizontal fold.
