Description

Seven consecutive issues of Harper’s Weekly, spanning April 15–May 27, 1865, documenting many of the defining events of the closing weeks of the Civil War and the aftermath of Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. The illustrated newspapers contain contemporary coverage of military operations in Virginia and the Carolinas, the fall of Richmond and Petersburg, Lincoln’s assassination and funeral, the pursuit and death of John Wilkes Booth, the transition from the Lincoln to the Johnson administration, the capture of Jefferson Davis, and the surrender of remaining Confederate forces. Issues include:

- April 15, 1865 (Vol. IX, No. 433): Front page featuring Major-General Edward R. S. Canby, with an engraving of Lieutenant-General Grant’s headquarters at City Point, Virginia; interior engravings include scenes from Sherman’s Carolinas campaign, the Battle of Bentonville, the fighting at Fort Stedman, and Union prison camps.

- April 22, 1865 (Vol. IX, No. 434): Front page headed “The Final Victory,” with scenes from the Battle of Five Forks, including General Philip Sheridan in action; interior engravings depict the Union occupation of Petersburg and Richmond, views of the Confederate capital, and the final Virginia campaign.

- April 29, 1865 (Vol. IX, No. 435): Front page headed “The Murder of the President,” with a large portrait of John Wilkes Booth; interior engravings depict the assassination of President Lincoln at Ford’s Theatre, commemorative imagery related to Fort Sumter, and late-war operations around Mobile.

- May 6, 1865 (Vol. IX, No. 436): Front page featuring “President Lincoln at Home,” after a Brady photograph showing Lincoln seated with his son Tad; interior engravings include Lincoln’s deathbed, Ford’s Theatre, the Petersen House, the attack on Secretary Seward, and funeral ceremonies in Washington and New York.

- May 13, 1865 (Vol. IX, No. 437): Front page featuring President Andrew Johnson; interior engravings depict the pursuit and capture of Booth and Herold, Boston Corbett, Booth’s post-mortem examination aboard the monitor Montauk, and continued coverage of Lincoln’s funeral.

- May 20, 1865 (Vol. IX, No. 438): Front page featuring Garrett’s barn and outbuildings where Booth was shot, Garrett’s house, and Herold’s house near the Washington Navy Yard; interior engravings depict Lincoln funeral ceremonies, the explosion of the steamer Sultana, and related memorial imagery.

- May 27, 1865 (Vol. IX, No. 439): Front page featuring “Lewis Payne the Assassin,” photographed by Alexander Gardner; interior engravings depict the capture of Jefferson Davis, Johnston’s surrender to Sherman, Lincoln’s burial at Oak Ridge Cemetery, and other concluding military events of the Civil War.

In overall very good condition, with scattered spotting and wear, including small tears and paper loss, and instances of partial and/or complete separation to the spines.
