Contract between Winchester Pictures Corporation and William Faulkner, with the latter agreeing to render his services “as a writer in connection with a motion picture now entitled ‘The Left Hand of God,’ for an agreed-upon compensation of $1,500 per week. Signed at the conclusion in ink by William Faulkner and countersigned by a representative of Winchester Pictures. In fine condition.
Signed in 1951, just two years after Faulkner received the Nobel Prize in Literature, this contract documents his engagement to write the screenplay for The Left Hand of God, a developing motion-picture project acquired by Howard Hawks and Edward Lasker’s Winchester Productions. Faulkner completed an adaptation for the project, but his screenplay was ultimately shelved; when the film was released by 20th Century Fox in 1955, it used a new screenplay by Alfred Hayes. The contract captures one of America’s greatest novelists at the height of his literary fame while continuing his long and often uneasy Hollywood career.
