American sculptor (1850–1931) best known for his monumental historical works, most notably the sculpture that forms the centerpiece of the Lincoln Memorial. ALS signed “Daniel C. French,” two pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 6.5, March 5, 1924. Handwritten letter to “Mr. Pearson,” in full: “It was very kind in you to write me and I wish you to know how much I appreciate your expressions of sympathy. Mr. Bacon and I were indeed closely associated. There has hardly been a time in twenty years when we were not actually at work together on some architectural or sculptural problem. But the great loss is to the world which so much needs the beauty that he would have evolved in the next ten or fifteen years. Accept my cordial thanks for your kind letter.” In fine condition.
Written just weeks after the death of architect Henry Bacon, this letter offers a poignant tribute from Daniel Chester French to one of his closest creative collaborators. French and Bacon worked together for decades on major architectural and sculptural commissions, most famously the Lincoln Memorial, for which Bacon designed the great Greek temple structure, and French created the monumental seated statue of Abraham Lincoln. Here, French reflects on their long association, noting that “there has hardly been a time in twenty years when we were not actually at work together on some architectural or sculptural problem,” and laments the loss of the beauty Bacon “would have evolved in the next ten or fifteen years.” A moving missive connecting the two principal creators of the Lincoln Memorial in the immediate aftermath of Bacon’s death.
