Description

LS in Italian, signed “Massimo Gorky,” two pages on two adjoining sheets, 5.25 x 7, May 6, 1911. Addressed from the Italian island of Capri, a letter from Maxim Gorky to the Italian librettist and composer Carlo Clausetti, then serving as director of the Ricordi musical house branch in Naples, in full (translated): “I feel truly honored to associate myself with your noble and courageous initiative, which adds new splendor to the musical life of Naples. With great satisfaction I have noted that, alongside great European symphonists, you have made ample room for Russian music, which is particularly dear to me. Wishing Giuseppe Martucci the fullest success, I ask you to accept my cordial greetings.” In fine condition, with a few small spots to the top edge of the first page. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope.

Written from Capri in 1911, midway through Gorky’s seven-year Italian exile, this letter connects him to Naples’ musical life through Carlo Clausetti of Casa Ricordi, publisher of Puccini and Verdi. His note that Clausetti had made room for “Russian music, which is particularly dear to me” reflects his support for Russian culture abroad. The reference to Giuseppe Martucci, director of the Naples Conservatory and a leading advocate of symphonic music, is also of note, as it places the letter within Italy’s broader shift beyond opera.

From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
