Description

British philosopher and civil servant (1806-1873) who was an influential contributor to social theory, political theory, and political economy. ALS signed “J. S. Mill,” one page, 3.5 x 4.5, August 11, 1831. A handwritten letter to noted philosopher and jurist Jeremy Bentham, in full: “It will give me the greatest pleasure to dine with you tomorrow. On Saturday I am engaged.” In fine condition.

Written less than a year before Jeremy Bentham's death, this brief note reflects the longstanding personal and intellectual relationship between the founder of utilitarianism and his most famous successor. Bentham played an important role in John Stuart Mill's upbringing and education, maintaining close ties with the Mill family for decades. Although the letter concerns nothing more consequential than arranging a dinner engagement, it effectively links the central figures of classical utilitarian thought on a single page.

From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
