Handwritten letter to Mr. Gates, in full: “I cannot tell you what a kind and heartening thing you did to send me that letter for my birthday. I don't know on what date your own falls, but I wish you many happy returns of that and of all other days in every year. You ask if I am at anything new, now. Well—look where I am, God help me.” In fine condition.
Written on Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures letterhead during Parker's Hollywood screenwriting years, this brief note dates from the period following her return to California with her husband, Alan Campbell, in 1934, when she was working on film projects including the Academy Award-nominated A Star Is Born (1937). After thanking a correspondent for birthday wishes, Parker responds to an inquiry about new work with the memorable observation: “Well—look where I am, God help me.”
