Description

American artist (1861–1909) best known for his paintings and sculptures of the American West, and for his depictions of cowboy life in particular. ALS, one page, 5 x 6.25, 301 Webster Avenue letterhead, January 30. Handwritten letter: “I think the Harpers Weekly prints are not reproduced otherwise, and my magazine (Harpers) article was reproduced with its prints in my book ‘Men with the Bark On’ — Harper.” In fine condition.

Frederic Remington's illustrations and articles for Harper's Weekly helped establish him as the foremost artistic chronicler of the American West during the late nineteenth century. His scenes of cowboys, cavalrymen, Native Americans, and frontier life reached a vast national audience through the magazine's pages. In this letter, Remington responds to an inquiry concerning the reproduction of his Harper's Weekly illustrations, noting that material from Harper's Magazine had also been reprinted in his book Men with the Bark On (1895), a collection of western stories and sketches drawn from his firsthand experiences.

From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
