Description

Russian-born composer (1882-1971) whose distinctive, colorful, constantly evolving style earned him a place among the most influential composers in music history. His ballets The Firebird, Petrushka, and Rite of Spring represent three central benchmarks of 20th-century music. Partly-printed DS, one page both sides, 8.25 x 11.75, [ca. 1969], bilingual German-English application titled “Application for a Certificate of Tax Exemption in Respect of Royalties and Similar Amounts,” completed in the name of the celebrated composer. The document provides Stravinsky’s residence as “Essex House, 160 Central Park South, New York, New York 10019,” references his most recent U.S. income tax return filed in 1968 with the Internal Revenue Service in Los Angeles, and seeks exemption from German withholding taxes on royalty income pursuant to the U.S.–West Germany Double Taxation Convention. Signed on the reverse in ballpoint by Igor Stravinsky. In fine condition. One of the most influential composers of the 20th century, Stravinsky transformed modern music through such works as The Firebird, Petrushka, and The Rite of Spring. This uncommon financial document relates directly to the international administration of the royalties generated by these landmark compositions.

From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
