Letter to "His Majesty Radama The Second, King of Madagascar," in part: "We have received with much pleasure the Letter which Your majesty addressed to us by Mr. Lambert, and We gladly embrace the opportunity which that Letter affords Us, to express to You anew Our cordial Congratulations on Your Accession to the Throne, and Our best wishes for the long continuance and prosperity of Your Reign.—We rejoice to learn that Your majesty has opened the Ports of Madagascar to Commerce, and that You have given Your Commands to Your Officers to protect the persons and property of strangers who may resort to Your Dominions." In very good condition, with old tape repairs to the ends of fold splits, one touching the end of the signature, and a chip to the top edge of the last page.
Radama II ascended the throne on August 16, 1861, following the death of his mother, Queen Ranavalona I, whose long reign had been marked by strict isolationism, resistance to European influence, and persecution of Christians. The new king quickly reversed many of her policies: he reopened Madagascar to foreign trade, pursued treaties of friendship with Britain and France, declared freedom of religion, ended the persecution of Christians, and permitted missionaries to return and reopen their schools. Among his most consequential acts was the controversial Lambert Charter, which granted broad commercial privileges to French interests and helped draw Madagascar back into the orbit of European diplomacy and investment.
