French neurologist (1857–1904) best known as the namesake of Tourette syndrome, a neurological condition characterized by tics; his main contributions in medicine were in the fields of hypnosis and hysteria. ALS in French,, three pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.25 x 7, 29 Rue de l'Université letterhead, January 2, 1901. Handwritten letter to Emile Goubert, a doctor known for his research on forensic medicine and pathological anatomy. De la Tourette discusses 'gold bromide,' used primarily in neurology and psychiatry, with the hypothesis of its specific effects and actions on the central nervous system. In part (translated): "I have just received a letter from Mr. Roty informing me that your banquet has been postponed to Monday the 14th. I take note of this and look forward to attending. However, there is a postscript that reads, 'It will be a pleasure for me to have you preside over it.' I am replying to Mr. Roty that this honor belongs to him and that he should be the one to preside.
However, it would be unwise for you to have agreed with him to do so and for me to be forced to take the chair at the last minute. I would then have to give a three-point speech for which I am completely unprepared. My intention, however, is to say a few words.
I have been looking for the documents you sent me, but I believe I sent them to Lavy at the appropriate time, as I have not been able to find them, and I am organized, as they say at school. Send me a short curriculum vitae: tell me about your scientific qualifications, including gold bromide. Then tell me about your charitable works, such as tramite, and your administrative skills.
Bring them yourself, otherwise I'm as silent as a fish…for that day at Chambord; one evening or around 6 o'clock. Whenever you like, but at least 8 days before the party, otherwise… That's settled, isn't it, anyway.
I received your letter from Poligny yesterday. I believe I've already replied, probably. But I don't hesitate to repeat myself, asking you to give my respectful regards to Mrs. Goubert. I send you and yours my best wishes for a happy new year and excellent health." In very fine condition.
