TLS signed “Affectionately, Jackie,” one page, 5 x 7.5, personal 1040 Fifth Avenue letterhead, January 12, 1982. Letter to noted textile designer Leslie Tillett, in full: “Thanks so much for your letter and the Town and Country article telling about the Cathedral Workshops. What an exciting project both for St. John the Divine and you. I am certain this is another of your creative ideas and that it will be received with great enthusiasm. I do appreciate your asking me to be a member of the advisory council, but unfortunately, I must refuse. I am involved with a number of committees and organizations about which I care, and sadly a policy has had to evolve where I limit myself to them. I would love to make an exception for you but I feel I cannot do so in view of those I have refused. So many thanks for thinking of me and I wish you the best of luck always.” In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope.
From the 1940s through the 1970s, Doris Doctorow (D.D.) and Leslie Tillett ran Tillett Textiles as a husband-and-wife team, designing and printing custom fabrics in their home studio on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. They met in Mexico—Leslie, an artist, and D.D., a photojournalist for Harper’s Bazaar—and began producing hand-printed textiles known for their painterly quality and hands-on techniques. Their work quickly found an audience among leading tastemakers, including Jacqueline Kennedy, who commissioned their fabrics for the White House, as well as Bunny Mellon, Greta Garbo, Gary Cooper, Harry S. Truman, and more.
