ALS signed “Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis,” two pages, 5.25 x 7.5, personal ‘white scallop shell’ letterhead, postmarked January 20, 1969. Handwritten letter to noted textile designer Leslie Tillett, in full: “I think your outline for Bedford Stuyvesant is the most impressive thing I have ever seen. It will do more good than anything I can imagine. You don’t know how happy it makes me — or a deeper word than that — so grateful that there are people like you, and that you care. I have sent a copy of it to Burke Marshall. I will be away for about 3 weeks, but when I come back I hope something will be started, then I will be going to Bedford Stuyvesant + I hope to see you also + that all we will all have is good news for each other. Thank you with all my heart. Please give my love to Mrs. Tillett + John’s + mine to Seth.” In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope.
From the 1940s through the 1970s, Doris Doctorow (D.D.) and Leslie Tillett ran Tillett Textiles as a husband-and-wife team, designing and printing custom fabrics in their home studio on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. They met in Mexico—Leslie, an artist, and D.D., a photojournalist for Harper’s Bazaar—and began producing hand-printed textiles known for their painterly quality and hands-on techniques. Their work quickly found an audience among leading tastemakers, including Jacqueline Kennedy, who commissioned their fabrics for the White House, as well as Bunny Mellon, Greta Garbo, Gary Cooper, Harry S. Truman, and more.
