Description

Brass National Aeronautic Association lifetime membership card issued to "Dr. George W. Lewis," 3.75 x 2.75, recognizing him "as a Life Member." In fine condition.

Dr. George W. Lewis (1882–1948) was a pioneering American aeronautical administrator who served as the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics’ first Executive Officer, beginning in 1919, and later as its longtime Director of Aeronautical Research. Operating from Washington, D.C., he guided both the agency’s scientific agenda and its political affairs, while also overseeing research development and technical publications at the Langley Research Center. Under his leadership, the NACA grew from a small organization into a world-renowned institution employing thousands, earning Lewis international recognition for advancing American aeronautics. A formative mentor to many who would later shape NASA, he was succeeded by Hugh Dryden upon his retirement. In tribute to his legacy, NASA named its Cleveland facility the Lewis Research Center (now the NASA John H. Glenn Research Center at Lewis Field).
