Flown Series 1963 two-dollar bill, serial number A07690488A, carried aboard the Gemini 4 spacecraft, signed and flight-certified in green felt tip, "Flown on Gemini IV, Jim McDivitt." Encapsulated and graded by PMG as "Extremely Fine 40," with the label noting the provenance: "Ex. Jim McDivitt / Flown Aboard Gemini IV, 1965 / Jefferson Space Museum Collection."
Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by McDivitt, plus an additional handwritten letter of provenance, in full: "I flew $2 bill #A07690488A because it was unique & small! Jim McDivitt." Also includes photos of McDivitt posing with the bill and writing the note.
After government inquiries into 'contraband' banknotes and corned beef sandwiches carried on previous flights, NASA insisted that no 'hi-jinks' were to be allowed on the Gemini 4 mission. However, astronauts were authorized to carry 'something for the kids,' such as a few dollar bills or small tokens. McDivitt chose to carry five $2 bills in his Gemini 4 Personal Preference Kit (PPK), along with some other small souvenirs.
The Richard Jurek Collection.
