Naturalist and author (1838–1914) who helped establish Yosemite National Park. ALS, two pages, 8 x 10, October 14, 1896. Handwritten letter to General Henry L. Abbot, a surveyor and engineer who worked on the railroad through California and Oregon and later participated in the planning of the Panama Canal. In full: "I'm glad you all came unscathed through the battle of the trainrobbers. To you an old soldier I suppose it caused less excitement than my sudden encounter with that Humbold County squirrel. I felt desperately lonesome after you left. I got a team & drove to the cliff dwellings in a canon near town to put in the gloomy hours until train time. At Los Angeles I spent a day talking forestry to a lot of politicians then straight home. None of you know how much this summer has been to me after twenty years of solitude—and one of the greatest gains of the whole is having made your acquaintance. I have just written to your brother & Prof. Hirsch about the publication of a biographical sketch of the lamented Philip Abbot & everything I think has been satisfactorily arranged. Our Club will be glad to do his memory honor—as the most admirable of our mountaineers. And now general don't forget me." Double-matted and framed with a portrait to an overall size of 32.5 x 19.5. In fine condition.
One of the first modern preservationists, John Muir’s activism was instrumental in the establishment of Sequoia and Yosemite National Parks. He wrote extensively about California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains and founded the Sierra Club, becoming a leading voice in the early conservation movement. In 1903, President Theodore Roosevelt famously visited Yosemite with Muir, who persuaded him that federal protection was essential to safeguard the valley from mismanagement and exploitation—an influence that helped shape the future of America’s national parks.
