Scarce autograph document signed twice as “Paul C. Blum,” one page, 8 x 12.5, June 7, 1885. Submitted from the “Standing Rock Agency” in Dakota Territory, a handwritten statement from Blum vowing to abstain from drink while in the employment of William F. Cody, in full: “I, Paul C. Blum, do solemnly promise not to touch or drink any kind of intoxicating liquor while with the Buffalo Bill Wild West Show, or while in charge of Sitting Bull.” Signed at the conclusion by Blum. The reverse of the top edge is affixed to an 8.5 x 11 album page. In fine condition.
Paul Blum served as a government agent and ‘Indian trader’ tasked with managing Sitting Bull during the Lakota leader’s tenure with Buffalo Bill’s Wild West in 1885. Acting as both handler and intermediary, Blum oversaw Sitting Bull’s activities during a period in which the famed chief was exhibited as a principal attraction alongside performers such as Annie Oakley. Sitting Bull joined Buffalo Bill Cody’s show in June 1885 under a four-month contract, traveling with a delegation that included Seen-by-the-Nation, Spotted Horn Bull, Gray Buffalo Woman, Eagle, Long Dog, Gray Eagle, Crow Eagle, Flying By, Good Sounding Iron, and Princess Red Spear. Accompanied by interpreter Louis Primeau, the group was collectively known as the ‘Sitting Bull Combination,’ a troupe organized specifically for the 1885 touring season.
