Description

Wyatt Earp plans a meeting with his biographer, cultivator of his enduring legend as a frontier marshal

Legendary Tombstone lawman and gambler (1848–1929) famed for his involvement in the gunfight at the O.K. Corral. TLS signed “Wyatt S. Earp,” one page, 8.5 x 11, June 8, 1926. Letter to his biographer, Stuart N. Lake, in full: "Mrs. Earp and I are now returned from the desert; we have been home for about a week and we are glad to be back. Now I realize that it is beginning to be vacation time, and while I do not know what you have in mind for the summer, if it is at all coincident with your plans, I shall be pleased to have you call to see me; we shall be here until Fall. If you should drive out, please let me suggest that you select either Sixteenth Street or Washington (Nineteenth) Street in traveling west through the city (as Seventeenth Street is not a cut through), as far west as Ninth Avenue, then to Seventeenth Street and thence east for a block. The street car service is convenient over the Sixteenth (red) car line or the Washington St. ('W' - yellow) car line. Mrs. Earp and I shall look for you; we trust you are well and we send you the kind regards." In fine condition.

Stuart N. Lake’s Wyatt Earp: Frontier Marshal, published in 1931 (two years after Earp's death), became the most influential—and controversial—account of Earp’s life, transforming the aging lawman into a larger-than-life symbol of frontier justice. Based in part on Lake’s personal interviews and correspondence with Earp during the 1920s, the book presents a heroic, morally resolute figure whose exploits helped to define the popular image of the American West for generations. Though later historians have challenged its accuracy and noted embellishments, Lake’s biography remains a cornerstone of Earp’s legend, making letters like this one—written during their collaboration—especially significant as evidence of the relationship that shaped Earp’s enduring legacy.
