Union general (1819–1893) who commanded a division at Gettysburg and has controversially been credited with the invention of baseball. Civil War–dated ALS signed “A. Doubleday,” one page, 5 x 8, September 25, 1863. Handwritten letter to Lewis Jones of Scranton, Pennsylvania, in part: "I am not at present on duty and cannot therefore offer your son any position although I should be glad to do so. I have some testimony to his gallant conduct in my official report of the battle of Gettysburg now at the Head Qrs. of the Army of the Potomac. If I find any opportunity to be of service to him or to give him a place I will cheerfully avail myself of it." In fine condition. The soldier referenced is ostensibly Murdith L. Jones, a Union officer and aide-de-camp to General Abner Doubleday.
