Description

Elvis on the eve of superstardom—an important Presley and Parker dual-signed 1956 agency contract

Partly-printed DS, signed on both sides, "Elvis Presley," and "Col. Tom Parker," one page both sides, 8.5 x 15.75, January 31, 1956. Agreement between the William Morris Agency and Elvis Presley, who employs the former as his "sole and exclusive agent, adviser, manager and representative" for a period of five years. Signed at bottom of both sides in fountain pen by Elvis Presley and his manager, Col. Tom Parker. Also initialed by Elvis on a rider attached to the front, "E. P.," affirming that the agreement "shall not apply with respect to the phonograph recording field." In fine condition.

By January 1956, Elvis Presley stood at the precise threshold of superstardom—'Heartbreak Hotel,' his first single on RCA Victor, was released on January 27, 1956, and rocketed to number one, forever changing American popular culture. The William Morris Agency's formal engagement as Elvis's exclusive representative at this exact moment reflects Colonel Parker's shrewd orchestration of his client's transition from regional phenomenon to national star, with major television bookings, film interest from Hollywood, and a powerful new record deal with RCA all converging simultaneously.
