"Your letter and National Anthem received, it will afford me pleasure to perform your anthem in public, if you will furnish me the necessary arrangements for military band"

ALS, one page, 5.5 x 8.5, personal United States Marine Band letterhead, January 19, 1889. Handwritten letter to George Noyes, in part: "Your letter and National Anthem received, it will afford me pleasure to perform your anthem in public, if you will furnish me the necessary arrangements for military band. Our instrumentation is as follows: flutes, oboes, Eb clarinets, B clarinets (in quartette), Bassoons, alto, tenor and baritone saxophones, 1st & 2nd cornets, 1st & 2nd trumpets, soprano cornet, 4 French horns, 3 trombones, 2 euphonium…The summer concerts are the most opportune places to introduce a composition of this kind." In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed in Sousa's own hand.
