Description

16-year-old Leonard Bernstein observes the "genius" of William Shakespeare, outlining Macbeth—"an engrossing tale of murder & ambition"

AMS signed and dated at the head, "L. Bernstein, Oct. 8, 1934," one page both sides, 6.5 x 8.5, entitled: "Outline of 'Macbeth.'" The 16-year-old pens a summary of William Shakespeare's enduring Scottish play, in part: "The purpose of the author is obviously narrative; historical data is not given; it is certainly not a morality play; it is merely to tell an engrossing tale of murder & ambition. The central idea is ambition; it is this which motivates the play. The impression is one of horror. The action takes place in England and Scotland; the time is the present of Shakespeare's writing. The environmental factors are purely royal; the settings are in castles and palaces; only the witches' scenes interrupt these settings with contrasting sordidness.

The major characters include: Macbeth, easily led, changeable; Lady Macb, desirous of power; Duncan, righteous; Malcolm, upright; Banquo, suspicious; Macduff, brave…

It is perhaps instinctive on the part of the author that he weave into the plot a psychological study. It is part of his genius that he create a well-sustained plot without much purposeful thought." In fine condition.
