LS, one page, 8 x 8, September 24, 1860. Official letter of recommendation issued by the First Presidency, the presiding governing body of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which reads, in full: “To all persons to whom this letter shall come: — The bearer, Elder Ara W. Sabin, is traveling for the purpose of transacting business pertaining to himself but is in full fellowship with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we therefore recommend him to the brethren, and so far as he may find opportunity, to preach and baptize, we wish him to do so, and pray God to bless him in so doing. Signed in Great Salt Lake City, Territory of Utah, September 24, 1860.” Signed crisply at the conclusion in ink by Brigham Young as president of the LDS Church, and countersigned by Heber C. Kimball and Daniel H. Wells, first and second counselors of the LDS First Presidency. In very good condition, with old tape stains to fold separations, affecting appearance but touching only the first letter of Young's signature.
Accompanied by a vintage matte-finish photo picturing several members of the Sabin family. Ara Williams Sabin (b. 1822, New York – d. 1885, Idaho) was an early member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was the son of Salmon B. (Solomon) Sabin and Sarah S. Miller. Sabin was baptized into the LDS Church on February 19, 1844, and received his endowment in the Nauvoo Temple on January 3, 1846. He traveled west in 1849, working in Missouri to finance his journey to the Salt Lake Valley. Sabin married three times: first to Sally Canfield in 1848; second to Nancy Ann Hanes in 1850, with whom he had eight children; and third to Lucy Marie Canfield in 1879, with whom he had four children. He spent his later years in the Intermountain West and died in Idaho in 1885.
