Russian physiologist (1849–1936) best known for his investigation of conditioned reflex through the use of experiments involving salivating dogs. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1904. ALS in Cyrillic, one page, 9 x 14, May 11, 1876. Pavlov writes to the "Director of the Imperial Medical Academy," in full (translated): "From third year medical student Ivan Pavlov. Request to His Majesty to release the summer scholarship for June, July, and August." The director has approved his request in the left margin in purple ink: "Ivan Pavlov passed the examination with satisfactory marks thus he will be granted the scholarship money." In fine condition, with some trivial corner loss.
This letter dates from a formative period when Pavlov was still undertaking the scientific research which would later shape his extremely successful career. Pavlov's undergraduate study had been rigorous: between 1870 and 1875, he studied natural science, math, and physics at the University of St. Petersburg. He then enrolled in the Imperial Medical & Surgical Academy where he completed his doctorate and postgraduate fellowship, graduating in 1879 with a gold medal award. Pavlov would later return to the Imperial Medical & Surgical Academy to chair its physiology department for three decades.
From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
