Description

TLS signed “Jackie,” one page, 8.5 x 11, Doubleday letterhead, March 21, 1989. Letter to noted textile designer Leslie Tillet, in full: “I hope you will forgive me for taking so long to reply to your book proposal on the Conquest of Mexico. I wanted so much to explore every possibility of it being published here. The editors I spoke with agreed that the tapestry is extraordinary. However, after much deliberation it was decided that there would not be a strong enough market for such a book to be published satisfactorily. I feel sad that this is the case. It would have been such fun to have done this book together. And so I am returning the material to you. Thanks so much for sending it to me.” Jackie adds the valediction in her own hand, "With much love to you and Didi." In fine condition.

From the 1940s through the 1970s, Doris Doctorow (D.D.) and Leslie Tillett ran Tillett Textiles as a husband-and-wife team, designing and printing custom fabrics in their home studio on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. They met in Mexico—Leslie, an artist, and D.D., a photojournalist for Harper’s Bazaar—and began producing hand-printed textiles known for their painterly quality and hands-on techniques. Their work quickly found an audience among leading tastemakers, including Jacqueline Kennedy, who commissioned their fabrics for the White House, as well as Bunny Mellon, Greta Garbo, Gary Cooper, Harry S. Truman, and more.
