Description

Born Giovanni Maria Mastai-Ferretti in 1792, he served as pope for a record 31 years, 7 months, and 23 days, beginning on June 16, 1846, until his death in 1878. Manuscript apostolic benediction in Latin, signed “Pius P.P. IX,” one page, 8.25 x 9.5, July 6, 1876. An apostolic blessing, which reads, in full (translated): "Greetings and the apostolic blessing. As in the current struggle no other matter is at stake but God's, you are right, dear son, in saying that you are in it for Us, against whom certainly neither human malice nor the forces of darkness could prevail. We thus receive with a calm spirit the signs of victory from you, which in the Church cannot be wrong. However, whereas We thank you on the grounds of your office, we beseech God at the same time that that which you wish and seek for Us, you may yourself be able to attain and expect. May God grant you support and assistance and any necessary or opportune means in this; and meanwhile, take as the protection for this the apostolic blessing, which is especially a guarantee to you of Our benevolence, dear son, and which we impart with love to all of your diocese.” Signed prominently at the conclusion in ink by Pope Pius IX. In very good to fine condition, with old tape repairs to splits to the intersecting folds.

From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
