Description

Congressman Kennedy thanks a supporter after “my announcement,” marking his entry into the 1952 Senate campaign

TLS signed “John Kennedy,” one page, 6.25 x 9, personal Congress of the United States (House of Representatives) letterhead, April 25, 1952. Letter to Francis X. Dwyer, in full: “I appreciate your letter in regard to my announcement and am very grateful to you for your offer of assistance. I shall certainly take advantage of it. I look forward to seeing you in the near future.” In very good to fine condition, with stains and toning affecting only appearance; the signature is clean and completely unaffected.

When Kennedy announced his candidacy for the United States Senate on April 7, 1952, he launched an intensive and highly organized campaign aimed at unseating Republican incumbent Henry Cabot Lodge Jr., a leading figure in one of Massachusetts’s most established political families. Traveling tirelessly across the state, Kennedy built broad support among urban ethnic communities, labor groups, and younger voters, presenting himself as an energetic and forward-looking alternative to the entrenched Republican senator.

The election, held on November 4, 1952, culminated in a closely contested but decisive victory for Kennedy. His upset win not only ended the Lodge family’s political dynasty in Massachusetts, which had endured for generations, but also marked the beginning of the Kennedy family’s rise as a dominant force in American politics. Kennedy’s success in this campaign established him as a major national figure and set the stage for his future ascent to the presidency.
