Description

United States Army officer (1896–1984) who fought in World War I, World War II, and the Korean War. TLS signed “Mark Clark,” one page, 8.5 x 11, personal The Citadel (The Military College of South Carolina) letterhead, August 10, 1982. Letter to educator John R. Siegel, in full: “Your letter of August 6 with its enclosure has been received. I’m happy to sign the statement you enclosed and it is returned herewith. With reference to your question, that’s a tough one to answer, for I was not familiar at the time with the actions in the Pacific, for example, or in Normandy. I was too concerned with the fighting in Italy. I dislike being a ‘Monday morning Quarterback.’ When you have read the enemy’s memoirs, one may be too prone to criticize the actions of others.

I’ll give you a general answer to your question. I think the United States demobilized too fast after the end of the war. Naturally, we were anxious to get the men home, but it gave the Russians the opportunity to grab parts of Europe, such as Romania, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Poland, etc. Another questionable decision had to do with who took Berlin. We would have been in a much better position after the war, had the allies done so. They were in a better position than the Russians, but we were used to appeasing the Russians at that time, and still continue to do so.

Another mistake the allies made, in my opinion, was after the capture of Rome, and Ike was well along in France, to go into Southern France. I did not think it was necessary, even though I was the Commander Designate. I felt we should have turned to the East and with the help of Tito and the Yugoslavs, which help was offered, move to the East, and my Army Group from Italy would have been in Vienna, Budapest and other important places before the Russians. Sorry I can’t be of more assistance with your questions.” In fine condition.
