Description

ALS signed “B. Disraeli,” four black-bordered pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, August 21, 1847. Addressed from Bradenham Manor, near High Wycombe, a handwritten letter to Benjamin Lumley (1811-1875), the Canadian Jewish expatriate managing Her Majesty's Theatre, a historic opera company in London's West End, in part: "Let me congratulate you on the triumph of a critical season and express my hope that you may always find that prosperity, wh: your energy and enterprise eminently merit. I have desired my servant to return you the books which you were so obliging as to forward me. I digested their contents, and without interest, I was musing over the subject, when a very severe domestic sorrow dissipated all my conclusions.” In very good to fine condition, with scattered stains to the first two pages. Disraeli's correspondent Benjamin Lumley was largely responsible for Europeanizing Her Majesty's Theatre in the early 1840s by introducing French and Italian dramas, musical scores, and librettos. Lumley enjoyed initial business success but then returned to practicing law after running into financial difficulties.

From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
