TLS signed “H. H. Arnold,” one page, 8 x 10.25, Headquarters, Army Air Forces letterhead, September 27, 1945. Letter to Frank P. K. Barker, the president of the Commissioners of Lower Merion Township of Ardmore, Pennsylvania, in full: “Just a line to acknowledge your letter of September 21st, and to tell you that I will be glad to send one of my uniforms and other personal mementos of World War II for the archives of the Lower Merion Township. I note that you have been designated by the Board of Commissioners to accept such trophies, and therefore will arrange for these souvenirs to be sent to you personally.
I am wondering, however, what kind of a uniform would be best for the display you talk about. Going down through the ages, the blue uniform will last longer and look better but it was not used during the war. As time goes on, the olive drab uniform will begin to look like hell. It will take on a greenish tint as the years go by. The display of the blue cape, the blue hat with all the gold braid on it, and the blue uniform with all the ribbons on it would be far more effective as far as the general public is concerned.
I am also wondering just how you are going to display these things. As I told you, I have my name plate that I use on my desk. I have the flag which I have had on my desk all during the war, and I am thinking of sending you two chronometers that I used to maintain the correct time during the whole war, one giving Greenwich time and one giving local time. These are in a case. If you will give me more information as to just how and in what particular part of some building you are going to display these things, I will know better what to send you. Please be more explicit.” In fine condition, with discoloration along the mailing folds. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope.
From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
