World War II-dated TLS signed “C. G. Jung,” one page, 8.25 x 11.5, personal letterhead, October 5, 1939. Letter to noted anthropologist Walter Evans-Wentz, in full: “I have checked all your propositions and I agree with them whole-heartedly. There are some variations of queries which I have marked in their places in your manuscript which I enclose. I thank you very much for your painstaking work on my manuscript, which certainly needed a good deal of consideration. I hope that it is now in a shape that meets with your approval. In the meantime the world-war has broken loose and I hope that you can continue your work in the peace of your mountain isolation at Almora.” In fine condition.
Written just weeks after the outbreak of World War II, this letter finds Carl Jung continuing his scholarly work amid the onset of global conflict. His correspondent, W. Y. Evans-Wentz, was an important interpreter of Eastern religious traditions, whose landmark publication of The Tibetan Book of the Dead (1927) introduced Western readers to the Bardo Thodol, a Tibetan Buddhist text describing the intermediate state between death and rebirth, presented as a guide to postmortem experience.
Jung contributed a psychological commentary to a later expanded edition, intended for Western readers unfamiliar with Tibetan Buddhism. In it, he interpreted the text’s descriptions of postmortem visions not as literal religious doctrine, but as symbolic expressions of the unconscious mind, paralleling psychological experiences encountered in dreams and states of crisis.
From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
