Description

Queen of the Netherlands (1880-1962) from 1890 until her abdication in 1948. She reigned for nearly 58 years, making her the longest-reigning monarch in Dutch history, as well as the longest-reigning female monarch outside of the United Kingdom. Her reign encompassed World War I, the Dutch economic crisis of 1933, and World War II. DS in Dutch, signed “Wilhelmina,” one page both sides, 8.5 x 13, March 1, 1934. Diplomatic credential letter sent to the President of the Republic of Cuba, Carlos Mendieta, in full (translated): “Great and Good Friend, guided by the desire that no interruption whatsoever may occur in the diplomatic relations between our two countries, I have decided to appoint a successor in place of the late Mr. Dr. J. H. van Roijen.

For this purpose, I have chosen my chamberlain, Jonkheer Mr. H. M. van Haersma de With, Knight of the Order of the Netherlands Lion, Officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau, most recently my Envoy at Prague, whom I hereby accredit to the Republic of Cuba in the capacity of my Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary.

The personal qualities of Jonkheer van Haersma de With assure me that he will strive to merit your esteem and to win your confidence. In this conviction, I request of you, Mr. President, I request you to receive my envoy with goodwill and to give full credence to what he shall communicate to you in my name, in particular when he conveys to you the assurance of my high esteem and friendship.” Signed at the conclusion by Wilhelmina as Queen of the Netherlands, and countersigned by Foreign Minister Andries de Graeff (1872–1957). Includes a TLS from her husband and consort, Duke Henry of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, signed “Prince of the Netherlands,” dated March 18, 1926. In fine condition, with a minor split to the end of the central horizontal fold.
