Description

Born Giuseppe Melchiorre Sarto in 1835, Pius X served as pope from 1903 until his death in 1914. Known for his conservative, anti-modernist philosophies, he became, in 1954, the first pope to be elevated to sainthood since Pius V in 1712. ALS in German, signed “Pius PP. X,” one page both sides, 8 x 10, personal coat of arms letterhead, October 11, 1912. Handwritten letter to Georg von Kopp the Prince-Bishop of Breslau, in full (translated): “With great joy I have received the news that you will soon celebrate the 50th anniversary of your priestly ordination and likewise the 25th anniversary of your episcopal consecration in Bratislava, in shared and double joy for the clergy and your people. On both occasions, beloved son, we congratulate you from the heart, and not for just one reason: first, because it befits a father to share in the joys of his sons; and then especially because over so long a period of your life you have labored in the preservation of the salvation of mankind and in the advancement of the Catholic cause, bringing much honor and benefit to the Church.

We therefore wish and pray to God with all our strength that He may preserve you in good health for as long as possible; thus you will surely continue to guide the flock entrusted to you, as energetically and spiritually as you are, and to make yourself ever more deserving before God and the Church.

Trusting in the firm hope that this will come to pass, and that this unique proof of our goodwill, by which we wish, as it were, to crown the forthcoming celebrations, will be welcome and pleasing to you, we impart to you, beloved son, to the clergy and to your people, the Apostolic Blessing in the Lord with loving affection.” In fine condition. Accompanied by a colored portrait bearing a printed signature.

From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
