Philadelphia-born lawyer and inventor (1821–1902) best known as the patentee of the Civil War-era 'Thunderbolt' explosive shell and fuse, for which he later pursued compensation claims against the U.S. Navy and War Department. He also held patents in metallurgy, including the gold-silver-copper alloy known as Goloid, and was active in patent law and invention during the mid-19th century. Civil War-dated engraved printed portrait of William Wheeler Hubbell by Van Ingen & Snyder, 6 x 9.25, signed and inscribed below in bold ink, “F. I. Dreer, with the regards of Wm. Wheeler Hubbell, Phil’a May 12, 1863.” In fine condition, with two horizontal mailing folds.
