Description

The 'atomic spy' on Harwell letterhead—Klaus Fuchs writes a routine letter from inside the office where he was betraying the Manhattan Project to the Soviets

German theoretical physicist and atomic spy (1911–1988) who worked at Los Alamos during the Manhattan Project and was responsible for many significant theoretical calculations relating to the first nuclear weapons; Fuchs was exposed in 1950 as an 'atomic spy,' supplying information about the Manhattan Project to the Soviet Union during World War II and after, and was sentenced to 14 years in prison. TLS signed “K. Fuchs,” one page, 6.5 x 8, Theoretical Physics Division, Ministry of Supply, Atomic Energy Research Establishment letterhead, February 27, 1948. Letter to noted mathematician Professor G. N. Watson of the University of Birmingham, in full: “Mr. Scott who is working in the theoretical division at Harwell has come across an error in your book ‘Modern Analysis’ in connection with Whittaker functions. He was interested in these functions in connection with the relativistic theory of the electron. I enclose a note by Scott. I should be very pleased to have your opinion. Perhaps Mr. Scott might see you sometime when he is in Birmingham.” In very good to fine condition, with irregular toning and scattered foxing.

The Atomic Energy Research Establishment (Harwell), founded in 1946 as Britain’s principal postwar nuclear research center under the Ministry of Supply, brought together leading atomic scientists from the wartime program. Klaus Fuchs headed its Theoretical Physics Division, continuing advanced work in nuclear and reactor theory following his contributions to the Manhattan Project.

A Course of Modern Analysis, colloquially known as Whittaker and Watson, is a landmark textbook on mathematical analysis written by Edmund T. Whittaker and George N. Watson, first published by Cambridge University Press in 1915. The first edition was Whittaker's alone, but later editions were co-authored with Watson.
