British Army officer (1895-1985) and commander of XXX Corps in World War II, who served under Bernard Montgomery in North Africa and Europe and was regarded as one of his most effective corps commanders. A veteran of two earlier conflicts and twice a prisoner of war, he was wounded in 1943 before returning to command in Europe. After the war, he became a military historian, author, broadcaster, and Black Rod in the House of Lords. Handwritten manuscript by Lieutenant-General Brian Horrocks containing his recollections of Dwight D. Eisenhower and serving under Montgomery of Alamein during World War II, unsigned, four pages (penned on both sides of two 8 x 13 notebook pages), no date. Although unconfirmed, the manuscript’s tone and subject matter are consistent with passages in Horrocks’s 1960 memoir A Full Life, and may reflect related autobiographical material. The manuscript, in part: “On the 3rd August 1944, I arrived by car from the United Kingdom to take over command of 30 Corps in Normandy…I was delighted to get back to an active command again after an absence of over a year…I was walking…F. M. Montgomery headquarters in Normandy, feeling rather depressed and apprehensive. For, although I was glad to be back in the fold after a year, it all seemed very strange. Suddenly, out of the military caravan stepped the familiar figure of General Eisenhower. When he saw me, his whole face seemed to expand into that famous grin, and shaking me by both hands he said, ‘Say, Jarocks, there is no one I am gladder to see back again than you.’ I didn't for a moment [believe] that this was strictly true, but at once I felt better…I have mentioned this small incident because above everything else, Eisenhower was a warm, friendly, selfless man…Those were the qualities which endeared him to his subordinates and which engendered a feeling not far from devotion among his immediate staff.” In fine condition, with corner loss to the first page, and rusty staple and paperclip impressions.
