French sinologist (1797–1873) who served as the Chair of Chinese at the Collège de France for over 40 years, known for his translations of Taoist writings and the 13th-century play The Orphan of Zhao. ALS in French, one page, 4.75 x 7.25, September 11, 1842. Handwritten letter to "Monsieur Gide, Libraire-Editeur," in part (translated): "You will soon receive some sheets of the third volume which I have had printed, containing geographical fragments translated by M. de Humboldt. Please be assured, Monsieur, that I will not put any delay in correcting the sheets of the third volume where the Chinese fragments will be found." In fine condition.
