Russian chemist and inventor (1834–1907) who formulated the Periodic Law and created a predictive version of the periodic table of elements. ALS in Russian, signed “D. Mendeleev,” one page, 8.25 x 10.5, December 23, 1890. Handwritten letter addressed to the director of the public library, Afanasy Fedorovich Bychkov (1818-1899), in full (translated): “Since I once, on behalf of Mr. Tamarin, not in vain bothered you to get a place in the Public Library, I have now decided to make a similar request. I hope that this time, too, you will not refuse to [appoint] Alexander Alekseevich Vasiliev, son of an artist at a porcelain factory, to the vacant position of junior duty officer. I believe that he will live up to the recommendations. Please accept the assurance of my deepest respect and readiness to serve.” In fine condition. Afanasy Fedorovich Bychkov (1818–1899) was a Russian historian, archaeographer, bibliographer, and paleographer. He was elected an academician of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences in 1869, served as director of the Imperial Public Library from 1882 to 1899, and became a member of the State Council in 1890. He held the rank of Actual Privy Councilor.
