Description

"I hope you will be able to read my earlier & more popular books—'The Malay Archipelago,' 'Natural Selection & Tropical Nature'—'Darwinism'—and 'The Wonderful Century'"

British naturalist, explorer, and biologist (1823–1913) best known for proposing a theory of natural selection which prompted Charles Darwin to publish his own. ALS signed “Alfred R. Wallace,” four pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.25 x 7, March 2, 1906. Handwritten letter to "Miss Kimball," in part: "I am glad you find my books intelligible. I hope you will be able to read my earlier & more popular books—'The Malay Archipelago,' 'Natural Selection & Tropical Nature'—'Darwinism'—and 'The Wonderful Century.'" He goes on to complain about the costs of international postage— "Americans seem unable to remember that foreign letters are 5 cents the 1/2 ounce (not the ounce), as I have sometimes a business card or a newspaper cutting sent, just making the letter over the half ounce & causing me to pay 10 cents for something of no value whatever!"—before making a comment on his son's stamp collection. In fine condition.

From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
