German chemist (1803–1873) regarded as one of the greatest chemistry teachers of all time, and also known as the 'father of the fertilizer industry' for his discovery of nitrogen as an essential plant nutrient. ALS, one page, 5.25 x 8.5, May 29, 1858. Handwritten letter to Sydney Hamilton of London, in part: "I concur in everything which Mr. Graham the Master of the Mint thinks proper in the way to proceed of filing the specification and in obtaining Letters Patent for my invention and I return immediately the two documents you send me for my signature." Affixed to a same-size sheet and in very good to fine condition, with scattered light staining, and a small area of paper loss affecting one word of text.
