German-born engineer and architect (1806–1869) who earned much acclaim for his innovative designs for suspension bridges, culminating in his 'masterpiece,' the Brooklyn Bridge. ALS signed “John A. Roebling,” one page, 5 x 8, personal letterhead, April 8, 1868. Handwritten letter to John L. Suess, in part: "I have already engaged a draftsman for the East River Br. should the work go on, but possibly I may want to employ another one, at least for some time. I would suggest to you to give me a call at my office in Brooklyn which will be opened as soon as the work is to be actually commenced." In very good to fine condition, with separation along the top fold archivally repaired on the reverse.
In 1867, Roebling was named the chief engineer for the proposed Brooklyn Bridge, which would connect the boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn over the East River. At the time this letter was written, preliminary planning and staffing for the unprecedented project were actively underway, as Roebling worked to assemble the skilled technical team necessary to execute what would become the longest suspension bridge in the world. Tragically, a year later, Roebling would suffer the accident that led to his death, passing leadership of the project to his son, Washington Roebling.
From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
