Description

Advocate on behalf of the indigent mentally ill (1802–1887) who created the first generation of American mental asylums. During the Civil War, she served as a Superintendent of Army Nurses. Two ALSs, signed "D. L. Dix," totaling four pages, 4.5 x 7, no years. In one letter, Dix writes to her friend, "Harriet," congratulating her on "the opportunity of welcoming to the United States your valued friends." In the other, she addresses "Thomas R. Stryker," suggesting that a work entitled 'Stryker's American Register' be added to "the State Hospital Library at Trenton." In overall fine condition.

From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
