Description

Neat ink signature, “Yours very truly, U. S. Grant,” on an off-white 3.75 x 1 sheet, which is affixed to a larger 5.25 x 8 sheet bearing an attached signature of Illinois politician John Wentworth. In fine condition. Both Grant and Wentworth were Illinois allies to President Abraham Lincoln, with Grant from Galena and Wentworth from Chicago. ‘Long John Wentworth’ was mayor of Chicago and a Democrat-turned-Republican who supported Lincoln's campaign for the U. S. Senate in 1858 and the Presidency in 1860, when the Republican Convention was held in Chicago. He and Lincoln had a mutual support for the Republican cause, and Wentworth was elected to the U. S. Congress in 1864.
